Let's start back with your tow vehicle.

On the driver's side door or door frame, there should be a sticker with the vehicle's weight ratings. There should be three numbers: GVWR (gross vehicle weight rating), GVWRF (gross weight rating for the front axle), and GVWRR (gross weight rating for the rear axle).

Yes... this is what I've already done, though less empirically.
Pathfinder, not 4Runner. I haven't gotten a chance to check the actual door ratings, but the published GVWR is 5986lbs, (curb weight 4149lb, max payload of 1837lbs). If we pretend that the only thing not included in the curb weight is 150lbs of driver, we get 230lbs more than that in humans, 50-130lbs of dogs, 20gallons of gas, 126lbs, say 430lbs tongue weight (~12% of 3600lbs), leaving more than 900lbs for the rest of our ****. I'm not really worried about vehicle capacity, this is why I'm aiming around 3500lbs for the trailer, having already done these rough calculations. This is why my post starts where it starts.
Not that I don't appreciate the suggestion, I'm just already past that.
