In my opinion, the main part of your whole thought/shopping process here is based on that part of the idea in this way: you have to decide if you are going to stay within the payload limitations or not.
I'll say the same as I always do in these threads: a person needs to decide right up front if they think the factory stated numbers are gospel, or are they a suggestion.
If you believe they are true limits, then you either need a small enough trailer, or a big enough tow vehicle.
If you believe they are a simply a guideline, and can therefore be fudged, then you open up your choices to do what you personally think is best.
Ultimately, you are the one responsible, so obviously you are the one who has to make the call.
As you might guess, you can infer from my comment, some people "get by" with smaller tow vehicles by exceeding the numbers. I'm sure many of them get away with it for years or maybe even their whole life of towing.
We here on the forum are not trying to throw rain on your parade, we're just trying to help you understand what the numbers mean, and how they may apply to your situation.
