loosing old members

I've been here a long time too and I have yet to post a Picture so the idea that's its difficult is Mute to me. Not even sure I've ever tried. I do get your idea about turning off signatures....who needs to know how many cars you have, how many RV's you've gone thru or in my case how many dogs I have and had!! LOL

Yeah this forum is "old" but for me it's broke in like an old pair of shoes. I'm here for the comments and find the clutter of pictures, inline ads, automatic clickable text, etc. in more modern forums to be a distraction. Sometimes I have to look around to find the content of the post. I view this site with signatures off for that same reason. I don't need to keep seeing your truck & camper when I'm here to read your comments.

Posting pictures is an issue and there are countless newbies commenting on how they couldn't figure out how to upload a picture of their problem. In end, most get it figured out or at least post a link to their picture.

Focused conversation in specific user forums or pages can be great but much of what I've learned over the years wouldn't be found there. RV's of all types have so much in common so the larger the group the better.

I suspect user attitudes and moderation are bigger drivers of whether people stay or go, not just that "it's old looking". I could be wrong.

My first post in like 6 months... I'll chime in. Not many have me beat for time here, BradW for one...But I think he beats everyone.

For me... a couple of reasons, none seem different than a lot of others... RV.Net's antiquated 90's era way of posting pics, Trolls, know-it-alls that were frequently wrong...or just the same posts over and over and over.. DRW vs SRW, should i get 19.5's, what's the best truck, how much can I haul, Can I use my stock hitch with a 4ft extension.... on and on and on...

I'm now on a couple FB groups dedicated to specifically my truck and my camper. Much more focused conversation, and no trolls or know-it-alls(besides myself)...

And super easy to post pics on FB. Case and point - look at my sig pic - I had to compress the jpg to such a small file size it to conform to the rv.net file size limit, it looks horrible. Again.. 90's era pic posting that has never changed since I started back in 2002.

Consider hosting it yourself. That way YOU maintain control over YOUR content. I did a road trip last summer and I chronicled the journey on a classic car forum. I really dislike the self-hosting option. It isn't conducive to long-term thread integrity. Thousands of forum posts became nearly useless when Photobucket stopped allowing external links to photos. Most people don't have the time or energy to maintain a self-hosted site for years. A forum needs to provide sufficient services to compete, and one expectation these days is that the forum itself will host photos of a reasonable size.

I'm saying this as an individual that has hosted websites, mailing lists, forums, etc., and self-hosted my own content on my own servers for over 30 years...

Actually, most of it was just fine. It’s just that when I first joined, I was being told all that stuff was wrong, wrong, wrong. I think one memeber even said I was a menace. I took it as a compliment.

The problem is most of the members here are relatively new to RVing..Very few were around when stake pocket tie downs were kool and a 10ft camper on a 3/4 just worked and we modded as necessary not what the neighbor or anyone thought...We tried it first..

And I used to load a TC with suicide jacks(Cable)..Still have a pair.(laughing).

I do pay closer attention to the weight ratings on tires and wheels now, and I’ve replaced that noisya$$ generator with a Yamaha 1000.

The “nuns and orphans” comment was a shout-out to a sadly passed on member, jponder if you remember him. Gads, that guy was funny!

Here’s a link to one of his posts. I always think of this when I’m mounting my storage box on the front of the truck. I think a couple of cabbage patch dolls would look pretty good on the front of it. :B :C
