I've driven highway 54 from Tucumcari on my way to Salina dozens of times. Yes, that is one desolate stretch of highway. A fews years ago, I had to drive all the way from Santa Rosa NM (I40) to Dodge City via 54 on snow and a weeks worth of sheer ice. One of the toughest, longest drives of my life.
