Personally I believe its the new breed of "camper". We camped on the Blue ridge Parkway for 20 year. Primitive campgrounds. Cool mountains, no AC needed. In those 20 years we NEVER heard a generator. Everyone that camped there was prepared for no electricity. All had lanterns, and gas stoves, coolers, and such. It was nice quiet camping.
Forward to just a few years ago. The new "camper" can't live with out electricity for 1/2 day. So now the nice quiet primitive CGs sound like truck stops. And I don't care what kind of generator you have. It is too loud for a primitive CG on the Blue Ridge Parkway. We are talking about CGs where the hiss of gas lanterns can be heard for over 100 yards. Where If I strike a match, the folks 3 sites over look to see what happened.
So the new breed of "campers" or as they are truly known camperwannabes. Go to the primitive CGs with their generators, stink up the place, run off the wildlife, and then go back to work on Monday, and bragg how they roughed it over the weekend.
What did we do. We started camping in the campgrounds around the BRP that have full hookups. It's much quieter, and the animals drop by.
IMOP. IF you just got to have electricity. Go to a CG that provides it. Don't screw camping up for every one else. OR you can do what old time campers do. buy a flashlight, a camp stove, and some propane lanterns. That is all you will need to camp in the High Country of NC. you won't even need a cooler. a good battery will run a fridge for 4 or 5 days with out needing recharging.

I have an onboard Honda EV4010 RV genset, which runs at 3600 rpm, sorry to say. I only use it for Desert camping, where it is 100* plus during the day, and you cannot hear it individually as everyone is running them. In the forest, it stays OFF. We make coffee on the stove. I am finishing a $700 solar system to totally prevent ever having to use it in the forest.
What annoys me is that these folks bring the kiddies to the forest and all they do is sit in the coach and watch TV all day.
I did have to ask a guy at Nascar weekend to shut his off as he ran it all night. He was afraid to use his furnace on battery. I just told him, run it during the day for a couple of hours, and you will be fine. I really didn't want to smell and listen to it with my windows open, and I certainly didn't want to have to close up the coach and run mine with strangers in a tent next to ME. If he didn't, a simple phone call would have hopefully taken care of it.
One thing that people need to realize is that RV'ing is not for the poor. There have been comments here that if your generator is not red or blue, yadda yadda yadda. But overall, if you cannot afford a proper 12V system or generator, can you really afford an RV? I get that people of limited means try to camp to have a vacation, and buy old and cheap RV's to do that. Fine, no problem, but when they negatively impact the people around them, then they should learn to live with less, like no generator in the damn forest for goodness sake.
Learn to cook on the stove that is in that camper. Learn to enjoy the forest around you. Leave the TV at home.
