Could it be the WDH? They often make loud creaking, groaning and popping sounds when turning. Makes a good signal for folks to get out of your way when arriving at or leaving a CG. You just need to ignore this.
Trailer axles have a slightly different turning radius and when going around a corner, backing into a site, etc., and one set of tires on an axle get dragged across a road surface. Spread axles would be worse for this. Never heard of this making a loud noise tho. For fun, stop some day half way through a turn (like say in a CG) and see how much the camber of one set of wheels on an axle changes...
