Loving this Pup

Been working hard to get our new to us PUP ready for camping. I had new tires installed on it yesterday, I've gone through all the appliances and made sure they are in good order. I Plan on purifying/sterilizing the water system tomorrow.

Choosing to downsize so far has been a great choice. With our old TT we had to bring extras, upgrading years brought with it amenities such as an outside shower, grill rack and built in propane connection, removable dinette table, These built in amenities mean we can leave the extra hose at home and the charcoal grill, and extra tables can stay home too.

We have gained some really large beds, a King, a queen, and two double beds, the permanent beds have heaters... Our sofa is much larger than the sofa in the TT.

With the TT we could bring everything with us, most of which we never used. Now we are really thinking about what we need to camp. Keeping an eye towards weight and function.

Then the real beauty of these amazing folding RV's manifests with their maneuverability. Yesterday while coming home from the tire shop I stopped to grab some breakfast, I went through the drive thru and grabbed a few biscuits for me and the Mrs. The drive thru!!!

Gas stations are no longer an ordeal... I can use pretty much any gas station now. With the TT there were a lot of stations that quite frankly were a handful to navigate. Speaking of gas, our fuel bill with the Minivan/PUP is about 1/3 of what it was with the TT.

It's not all roses, I understand that... We have to be creative with our gray water collection, and we have a single 20lb propane tank... That's about the worse of it so far.

Anyway, super excited for our first trip out next weekend.

Thanks!

Jeremiah
  • Thank you all for the comments! lots of good tips and caveats.

The "canvas" isn't really canvas it's some sort of Sumbrella material...thanks for the tip on the towel, it should be easy to dry off the tenting somewhat before we drop the top.

    Thanks!

  • Enjoy! We had a PUP for 17 years and loved it. Toting things back & forth between TV and the camper got a bit old, the older we got ;), but still, it's by far the longest we've had any camper. We sure made some good memories with it.
  • Congats! I miss a lot of things about my old pup, one recommendation from me would be to get some Pop Up Gizmos or something similar for the bunk ends, they really make a difference.
  • Enjoy! Two tips from someone who has camped in a PUP for the last 6 years.

    1. Keep a couple old towels to wipe the canvas down if you have to take down during a break in the rain (The biggest reason I'm ready to move up.)

    2. We struggled with condensation in our PUP until we found a dehumidigying product from Clorox. It comes in a gallon bucket like ice cream used to. Less than $10 and well worth the money. I'd tried other products but nothing stopped the condensation completely until I found the Clorox. Damp Rid makes similar products but the Clorox version worked better for us. Unfortunately, it can be hard to find and I'm striking out online. Check Target, Walmart, Home Depot, Lowes, etc.
  • You can always add a second propane tank along with a new rack for two and a crossover regulator. Pop-ups are a great economical way to camp...we did it with our boys for around 14 years. And, I still miss sleeping under the canvas on a nice summer night with lots of stars. Enjoy!
  • Congrats.
You may have downsized but, for you it's an upgrade.
    Enjoy your travels.
  • I think you might find that putting away the pop up wet is really bad, and then you need to open it inside a garage, or on a sunny day within a couple of days of putting it away wet, or it tends to smell really bad and possible mold.

Something like this one Aliner.com you can put away wet, there is no canvas, but no bathroom either. It is not nearly as long as your pop up when set up, and about the same length and weight as your pop up when towing. Very fast set up - about 90 seconds.

    Good luck!

    Fred.
