Lowering My Hitch Head

we replaced our aging Dakota with a new 17 Ram, should be a very capable tv with the hemi, 8 speed and 4wd.

plenty of payload in reserve and plenty of tow rating

but our tt is quite low compared to most on the road and we like it that way! one step into the trailer.

but, the hitch head is 6 inches higher compared to the Dakota so I have to drop it down. I have a second longer drop bar(12 inches) rated for 14000 lbs, in fact on the Dakota it hit the ground!!

that drop bar, with the hitchhead halfway down should be fine I would think with our 4500(camping wt) tt. comments?

can the dropbar be cut just below the installed hitch head for ground clearance, the bottom of the drop bar is about 6 inches from the ground without the tt on the truck
  • Why don't you contact someone who sells the type hitch you have or the mfgr.? If there would be an issue they should know it.
  • It should be fine. Of course the excess can be cut off, it would take a machine shop no more than 5 minutes to do it on a band saw.

yea, I really don't see why not, I did contact the manufacturer, haven't heard back yet

I bought the wd system lightly used, you could tow a tent trailer behind a semi with that drop bar!!
  • Can the bar be flipped to have the long part of the bar facing up? That's what i have suggested to a friend who had the same issue. Hard to tell without a picture to know if its applicable in your setup.

X2, flip it if you can. If not, no problem cutting it if you have a way to do it.
  • Try flipping it that's what I did when I got rid of my Dogrango and bought my Expedition.
  • Yes, you can cut the excess off without any problems. Make sure to smooth up edges and then you won't catch a sharp edge.

its an L shape, I need to mount it pointing down in order to lower the hitch head below the receiver
