I’ve read through this thread and my first thought was it’s a lot like reading through the diesel vs. gas thread…only shorter.
Thankfully, I don’t have to make this decision yet. Our current TT has 14” tires, so for me the Maxxis M8008 is a no brainer. The bad thing is we’re planning on selling this TT and moving up to a 35’, 8,500 lb. dry Jayco with 15” wheels sometime in June. I know, it sucks. It just worked out this one needs new shoes now. It’s either put new tires on it now or let it set. But at the same time I refuse to put something cheap on it just to get by, there’s too much at stake (which should give a clue as to how I think).
So fast forward to June. It doesn’t make a lot of sense (to me) to pull the new TT off the lot and put a new set of tires on it. I’ll probably try to get the rest of the camping season out of the OEM tires. BUT, we bought a new TV and we plan to do a LOT more traveling than we have in the past. AND the one thing I think we can all agree on is OEM tires are chosen for their low costs NOT their quality. That being said, the OEM tires will go by-by at the first practical opportunity.
So…do I replace those with LT tires or ST tires? Frankly, I don’t know. One drawback to changing to LT tires that I’m picking up is there’s a good chance that will include new wheels as well. And, depending on the particular tire and its profile it appears there could be clearance issues. Then there’s the debate about whether or not tire manufacturers recommend LT tires for use on trailers. If they don’t, they certainly wouldn’t honor any warranty.
But, if I’m reading all this correctly, the tradeoff is higher speed rating, possibly better performance, and LT tires last longer than ST tires. This is pretty much what I’ve taken away from these 19 pages and what I’ll base my decision on when the time comes.
If it were me , I would take the new tires AND rims and sell them , ( they are 15 inch ) Then I would buy 16 in rims ( assuming that they are 6 lug rims) And new LT tires . What you get for the factory tires and rims will offset the cost of the new wheels and tires
