Either way you go, if the ONLY plate available to you to keep it personal, is a 10K plate, you will be limited to 10K gvw no matter WHAT your door sticker says, no matter where you go. As that dang fool piece of paper is what said LEO will choose to hit you if pulled over for a weight issue. I have to admit, as a personal useage rig, this chance is pretty nil. If a wreck occurs, that is a different issue.
Where I am, granted west coast, what ever I pay for is the limit I can be gvw wise, even if I have a plate tag piece of paper that is higher than the door sticker. If lower, I am limited to the lower number on the piece of paper. My C2500 for example, door sticker is 8600, my license says max gvw is 8000! My old 05 dually, door sticker was 11400, I had a license good to 14K.
As others have noted, make sure you know ahead of time what you need to do.
