Made in America?

Long time Toyota owner here and when it was time to replace the wife's car, we looked at all offerings in the mid-size SUV class. The amazing thing is this class of vehicle is so ultra competitive (kind of like the mid size sedan class) that nobody makes a bad vehicle in this class. I let the wife choose the suv since she'll be driving it so she's got to live with it. We thought we'd like the Toyota Highlander as it was redesigned in 2011.

What I found is Toyota continued its tradition of boring interiors and lack of innovation. Yes, they make good reliable cars/trucks, but so does everybody else and the competition has more innovation/features IMO.

In this class, they're all about the same price, ie, around $40,000. She looked/drove 'em all and decided on the Govt Motors Chevy Traverse. It was an easy choice over the Highlander; much better fit and finish, much nicer interior with nicer features, better warranty, more power and better fuel economy, and larger 3rd row seating. We've had it for about a year and a half and so far it's been flawless.

Moral of the story: Buy what you like.

I thought Ford's 7.6l diesel was made in Mexico yet the f-series got top engine ranking for made in USA? Yes, I realize that the 6.7 is just a segment of the over-all engines Ford makes for f-series...but top ranking?

For me, doesn't lead a whole lot of credibility to that link.

Just like the one posted yesterday by the Motley Fool, this one is full of holes too. It list Chrysler as an American Company, which it is NOT. It list the transmission as either produced in the US or is not, which leaves a gaping question.....where did all the parts inside the transmission come from. Same question for the engine and all other components used to manufacturer the vehicle. Again, it appears to give Mexico and Canada credit for being American made products, which they are NOT, as they are foreign countries......For any person, especially a supposed learned college professor, to publish such incomplete and inaccurate info makes one wonder just who these people are trying to fool......

there is no car truck on the road that could function without its foreign parts. so it just doesn,t matter.

My Dodge Ram was made in Mexico, but this article gives credit for being made in America, maybe North America, which would include Mexico.

My Camaro is built in Canada but they consider it American made.

I guess we are in Kindergaten.

Here is what does it for me. Where do the profits go? And where are the headquarters of the parent company. Pretty simple really. There is a difference between an American manufacturer, and a North American manufacturer. Follow the money.

Really doesn't matter anymore with all the outsourcing..If you want to buy completely 100% American...buy clothes, toy's coats, jackets, running shoes.....WHATEVER that is made in America...going to be REALLY hard to do.....maybe easier with vehicles? Don't know with all the various electronics used that are made "over seas".....I'd love to buy "just American", but I would spend most of the time trying to find 100% everything I need, "made in the USA".
