In a way better cooling can be a double edged sword. If you are frequently running at temperatures deemed dangerous by transmission experts, then additional cooling is necessary. However, too much cooling can prevent the transmission from getting to a good operating temperature under unloaded situations, which is also bad. Transmissions, just like engines, need to get to a good operating temperature to burn off internal moisture from condensation.
One other point to consider...as mentioned, larger pans are not effective for cooling fluid, but since they hold more fluid it takes the entire system longer to heat up which may be beneficial on a hard pull. But what goes up must come down. A larger pan holding more fluid will take longer to cool down, so again, a double edged sword.
It seems like the best way to improve cooling if more cooling is indeed necessary is a larger or additional cooler.
