Maint Suggestions

Have a 2012 F150 Ecoboost 4x4, 25k miles, 5k was towing, only thing done so far is tire rotations and oil changes. Heading out next month for 5-6k mile trip out west, what do you all think I should have checked or done prior to this, looking for suggestions? I'm thinking check the brakes and maybe change the auto tranny fluid and filter.

  • Change the rear end fluid - put Synthetic in it. I changed mine after 600 miles of towing - it needed it.

I run synthetic in the engine (Rotella T), tranny (TranSynd), transfer case (TranSynd) and diffs (Mobil 1).

I would change the tranny (synthetic) to get fresh fluid in it - then maybe 75,000 miles after that.

Thanks, guess I can skip the tranny, manual says first change at 150k, coolant at 100k! Nothing listed for sever service for the 6 cyl engines or even the 5L, just the big 8. Filters and check the belts it is. Tires and fluid checks are normal preflight.

That's all we do. About 30K miles towing so far. But did switch to Ford's full synthetic oil just because I felt guilty spending so little on maintenance.

  • Change the tranny fluid and filter if you're pulling a trailer unless you have synthetic tranny fluid in it !!!!! Change the air filter !!!! Check your Serp. belt or replace it !!! Top off the coolant !!! check your air pressure in all 4 plus the spare !!!
I have never broke down along side of the road but I love doing PM on my little 6.7 F 350...Have a good trip !!
  • I wouldn't mess with the transmission at 25k. Change oil & filter, air filter if needed, check fluid levels and tire pressure then hit the road.
  • We don't have an EcoBoost, but we follow the manufacturers maintenance schedule for severe service which includes towing. Lots of stuff needs doing at 30K...

For sure if you are going 6,000 miles I'd start with fresh oil+filer or you will have to get it serviced along the way.

    Have a good trip.
