Well, if I was 70 years old and had the means and would not put any other finances in jeapordy, I'd just go enjoy the luxury of a new rig for the "last few years" as you put it.
That aside, you honestly have about the same overall chance of being charged the same $ or being upsold by a dealer or a private shop IF you don't already know who you're dealing with.
If you trust and have a rapor with the dealer then keep taking it there. Otherwise get reccomendations for dealer or private shop before taking your vehicle in. Surely you know enough people to get some reccomendations or what shops to go to or avoid.
Regarding your particular truck, it is one of the most relaible out there. And I say that and I'm not a Ford guy, but I've had 11, 12, and 15 model ford gassers. A 5.0 and 2 - 6.2s and both were solid performers. I ran that little 5.0 like it was a 3/4 ton truck, pretty much daily and when I turned it over for a new one after about 50k miles, it showed little to no mechanical wear n tear. You have a good truck.
