Yeah, tranzam. If the dealerships did work for cheap, not as many people would buy a new car!
But if a guy is not doing the repair himself then it is probably the going rate. Private shops know what dealer rates are and they don't charge a lot less (most of the time) because why would you undercut what you could make on a job.
While $100/HR or even more sounds expensive, if you take into account the total cost, not just what the mechanic sees on his paycheck, it ain't bad.
I bill out Laborers at around $65/hr, including all labor burden. Put overhead and even minor equipment with it, and it's around $100/HR per man, working.
