And one last update: the new receptacle is wired and mounted on the camper; and I ended up making the umbilical out of a 12/3 heavy-duty extension cord since I only needed 3 wires for mine (I'm not hooking up the 4th wire for the fridge).
I bought this plug set:
12 gauge wire is as big as it could handle - and at that, connecting the fine stranded wires involved a lot of aggravation and a bit of unladylike-language ;-)
The encouraging part: the wire on my extension cord IS the same size as what's wired in the camper. I feel better about not being able to go with 10 gauge.
The finished product - and I'm 99% certain it will work :-)
