My experience with ST tires made by Maxxis was that they were decent tires.
There are a few big things to make sure you get a good ST tire.
1) Check the build date- try to get some less than 6 months old
2) Make sure you have excess capacity on the tires, not just adequate
3) Keep them aired up properly
4) Inspect them often (check PSI etc)
5) Carry a tire repair kit
6) Invest in a TPMS if you can.
7) Replace tires ever 3-5 years
8) Keep the speed around 60 mph
I suspect that many of the "sudden" blow outs were tires that had a slow leak, overheated, and blew.... "suddenly"....
Maxxis tires are no worse or no better than others. They have a SMALLER population to sample from therefore the failure rate SEEMS smaller... I doubt it really is.
