Mileage change with smaller lighter trailer

My Excursion V-10 with 4.30's gets 7.8 mpg at 58 mph (OD locked out, cruise on)towing my Jayco Eagle 33' TT with super slide weighing about 8,500 pounds as towed.

I'm looking at trading for a 2010 Keystone Passport, 18 feet long with a sloping front nose and an as towed weight of approximately 4,300 pounds.

I know it will be a lot easier to tow, but I'm wondering if the mileage at 60 or so will be much better. I think I will probably be able to tow it in OD since it is so much lighter. The sloping front nose may help too.

  • Unless there's a significant difference in the square-footage front profile of the smaller trailer, I wouldn't think you'd see much change in mileage.

Weight/length of trailer are much less a factor than aerodynamics in most situations, perhaps excepting steep hill climbs.
  • I would not expect it to improve any. If you see 1MPG better you will be really lucky.
