I bought a diesel pickup in 2011 to haul a camper. I would not do it again but instead buy a gas V-8 and get the 4.10 gears. The extra range with a tank of diesel fuel is completely negated with my having to drive further to find stations that pump diesel.
I pay more for diesel than I do for premium gas. I pay twice as much for oil changes and have to change the oil more often. And I paid an additional $9,000 to get the diesel engine and upgraded transmission. $9,000 would buy enough regular gasoline to drive my truck for more than 20,000 miles.
With my diesel and a 4,000 lb camper load the truck gets 12 MPG on average. With no wind and no elevation gains it can be as high as 13.5 MPG. With 15 MPH wind and driving the truck at 65 MPH the mileage is about 10 MPG.
If I was concerned about fuel economy I would have a 1/2 ton gas powered pickup with a 1000 lb. popup camper or get a Class B motorhome on the Sprinter chassis with the Mercedes 5 cylinder diesel engine and get 25 MPG or better.
