I drove through it last summer, after staying at the Indian run campground near the visitor center. It's more rustic but I thought it looked much better. There will be a LOT less traffic going past that campground, compared to the one near the visitor's center. I really DONT like the CG near the VC.
Spider Rock is not a real big campground, I dont think, so get there by mid day.
Don't worry about missing the North Rim. I think it's overrated compared to places like Canyonlands, Natural Bridges, V of the G, Comb Wash. It's just better than the South Rim and has nicer forests.
