Goblin valley is nice, especially with kids (especially if you have seen the Galaxy Quest movie). A large area of mud goblins you can walk among - don't push them over. Also there is a nice slot canyon hike (Little Wild Horse and Bell canyons) a couple of miles from it down a paved road, and dispersed camping next to the buttes along that road. The morning at Goblin, and the afternoon hiking the canyons would be nice.
