Another option for you to look at as you develop your plans is the Cottonwood Campground at Navajo Lake State Park in NM. This is a very nice campground that I stayed at for a few nights a couple of years ago. Link: Navajo Lake State Park Cottonwood Campground
I mention this to you because of the discussion about Chaco Canyon. Although a bit of a drive, I used this location to go to Chaco.
I also spent a night in the Angel Peak Sceneic Area Angel Peak Scenic Areaalso in this area. I was flat-towing my jeep with me and used that to explore the terrain.
