Your springs were doing the job.  At 15K the Bilstien's made a huge difference on mine.  We changed out my Dad's 12 Dually also and you could EASILY compress and extend the old shocks that only had 10K on them.
No they were still working more or less, no leaks and still gas charged.
The difference was the effect of the valving! Stock with the 5er in tow a bad bridge transition would cause about three bounce cycles, with the Bilstien's I get about 3/4 of a cycle!
Just in case you wonder if that were OEM.
