That particular 454 had high compression and solid lifters from the factory. The only factory car that I remember that could really compete was a Buick GNX 455.
GNX came out in 1987. I think you meant to say GSX, probably with the Stage 1 455.
Your right it was basically the Buick Stage 1. That car was very fast and would dust most other factory cars.
Your '70 Chevelle could of been the LS6...450 hp/454. They were the high HP rated muscle car of the muscle car era. The big problem they had...was traction. Give them good tires and limited slip...they were very hard to beat, even match. A buddy had one.
You're also right about the Buick 455 Stage 1. Another ultra torquey muscle car that like the 454, was very difficult to beat.
Lessmore,
I'm impressed and your the first here for me to say "you gained my respect"... I was wondering if someone would have figured out the LS6. It's a real nasty engine! :B
And yes when matched up against the Buick Stage 1 (It's 455 was real nasty too :B)) it basically came down to the driver/experience and the quality of tires.
It's my belief that the LS6 powered Chevelle and the Buick Stage 1 would hands down beat pretty much any factory powered car during that era in a 1/4 race.
Now we all know what Fish's DNA is like and why I like a powerful trailer pulling truck. :B
