Mosquitos Invading Our Lance

We're in Alaska right now and we swear that the little b*s**rds are wiggling into our 1997 Lance camper.

Are there any special things to do besides closing all doors, windows, etc.?

I'd swear there was a pond in here where they are hatching.

  • Get a big can of surface contact bug killer and spray down the outside surface of the camper, including/especially the screens. Any bug that lands on it will die. Doesn't get rid of them all, but cuts the population down quite a bit.

A Thermacell (butane and little repellent pads) works great on Alaskan Skeeters, and aren't nasty smelling. They are around $25 up here and large refill packs are around $24, available everywhere.
  • One landed by the pumps at our local airport the other evening and the hanger attendant wandered out and pumped 50 gallons of 100LL in it before he realized it wasn't a airplane...
  • We were in northern Saskatchewan week before last and the bugs were bad. I tried the bowl of vinegar beside the bed after getting eaten the first night and it seemed to work.
  • Do you have a Fantastic Fan? Setting those fans to exhaust at high speed will draw all the buggers to the screen where you can squish them to death.

It also helps to be speedy when getting in and out of your camper. Don't hold that door open any longer than necessary. And as Joe mentions, make sure your door closes tightly -- the slider hatch thing on our camper screen door had about a 1/8" gap near the bottom that let the critters get in.
  • I like to burn a Pic coil to kill them inside a RV or tent. They will ride in on a person's clothes sometimes. During the day they will hide out but when it gets close to bedtime they like to come out for a snack. They can find any small crack so make sure your screen door fits tight all the way around and that all your vents have good screens on them, including the stove vent.
  • A thread last week or so talked about methods to get them out.
  • When this post is moved to the RVing in Canada and Alaska Forum you will get plenty of advice.
  • You don't like the State bird?

The good news is, they're big enough you can hit them easily. Beyond hiding, how about a citrus candle inside? cough cough
