Personally I think Motor Trend Car.Truck Of The Year is a bought and paid for award.
Seems whatever is kinda new that year gets it. If there is a few competitors, then the one with most ads in their magazine gets it.
Consumer Reports is as unbelievable as well as they don't seem to even understand vehicles. The guy who tests washing machines does the car stuff on his coffee breaks I think.
