I dare you to name a current vehicle that gets great towing economy. One of my camping buddies tows a 26 foot TT with slide (about 6500 lbs) with a Cummins 5.9 and gets about the same mileage I get towing a similar size/weight trailer with my Tundra. The Ecoboost gets about the same... 9-11 mpgs towing. So far it is on par with other tow vehicles, it makes low end torque like a diesel but without the increased cost/weight of a diesel. Seems good to me.
I would argue that most, if not all, people who tow with a half ton truck are part time towers. I would further estimate they tow less than 15 times a year. The vast majority of the time they don't need that torque and HP. The Ecoboost gets much better gas mileage than most trucks do when it is unloaded. Seems good to me.
You can get payloads of over 2000 lbs in a half ton truck. This is great in areas where it costs more to register a heavier duty truck. Again, for weekend towers, this is a great feature.
The issues I have is that its on a Ford and I have had reliability problems in the past. I am willing to give them another chance, the bride isn't ready yet. I am concered with long term reliability when towing and hauling that kind of weight. I know that Ford had some early problems with moisture in the intercooler. Once they get some serious miles on them and show they are reliable, I will give it a serious look.
