When a manufacturer starts making a nicely appointed 3/4 ton crew cab for less than $40K, with a 5 1/2' bed (so it will fit in my garage and fit in a Walmart parking space) that gets 21 mpg on the highway, averages 17 mpg around town, and pulls with over 400 lb feet of torque, I'll consider it. Until then, I'm happy as a pig in warm mud with my F-150 Ecoboost. So far, I've only towed about 1K out of the 6K miles on it, but that should change when I retire at the end of the year. Then I'm expecting about 8K miles each per year, towing and non-towing.
I'm not sure I added much to this discussion, but my point is that there is a niche for the capable half ton.
