The mountain passes in the West can have long grades but they generally aren't as steep as what you will find in the Blue Ridge, for example. We pulled a 3500# trailer from FL to WA state and back with a similar F150. We never avoided mountains, just put it in tow/haul and all was well. The shorter and lighter your trailer, the happier you will be towing. If it's just two of you, almost anything sold will be big enough.
