I'll thorw in my 2 cents worth. I had a 1988 lance, then a 1998 Real Lite, then a 2006 Arctic Fox 1050. They have all been great campers, and over all well built. The Arctic fox is by far the best insulated. 10 or 20 below F, and it still stays warm inside. With the lance, if it was zero out, the furnace couldn't keep it warm enough to sleep in. But even the AF has places where there is no insulation that I think there should be. The AF is my 1st camper with a slide, I will never go back! I love the roominess when the slide is open. And I am usually by myself, or with one other person. Your boys will most likely spend all their time outside, because it will get cramped in there with 4. But that OK, kids like being outside. Make sure to get a canopy, so if it rains, they can sit in the lawn chairs under the canopy. But a slide is nice to get some room if it's too windy to have the canopy out and it's raining.
Now on the generator thing. I had no gen in my lance, just a portable in the pickup bed. Both the Real Lite and the AF have built in's. There is NO WAY I would give up the built in, now that I am used to it. Even though I now have 200 watts of solar to charge the batteries. I am not a big power user, but when I want power, all I do is press a button in the kitchen. Wake up and its 25 degrees and snowing? Furnace has been running all night and the battery is a little low? Press the button. Want to make a bag of popcorn quick with no mess, or a bowl of oatmeal before you get dressed? Press the button on the wall and you have power. No going out in the cold and stringing cords and dumping gas, or finding your generator gone.
To me it's not a big deal how much the slide and the generator weighs with a dually. Just beef it up as needed and go.
Good luck, what ever you do I'm sure you will enjoy it!
