MPG for Dodge 5.7 hemi vs 6.4 hemi

16 highway unloaded is impressive. I've never seen over 12 highway unloaded on my 1500 with the HEMI 5.7, between 9 and 10 towing my tiny 20 ft trailer (3500#).
The tech guy at the dealership told me the first 1000 miles of how you drive will set my MPG for the rest of the time I own the truck. Well, almost every mile my truck has on it was spent towing, so maybe that explains terrible mpg even while not towing?
