I fully agree with your assessment above. If you have panels or banks of panels that are capable of higher voltages than your battery bank is when you see an advantage to a MPPT controller.
I also agree, but is it worth $300 additional to buy into the MPPT technology? At 200w prices, that almost doubles your purchase price!
My math shows me $300 buys you 200w of Amazon solar panels.
I can make my 200w 30% "better" with MPPT for $300.00.
I can make my 200W 100% "better" by using PMW and spending the saved $300 on 200w worth of additional panels?
And I am basing my savings on the fact my Charger controller cost over $100. There is plenty of PMW controllers out there for under $30.00.
I am not saying that PMW is better, and yes there is conditions that absolutely call for MPPT, but in some cases, PMW is fine.
And I can't buy into this because I drive a $50K truck I should not be frugal when I look at something like solar (my truck was only $35K new). Most people only have so much spending money to put towards stuff like this, and I have other things I want as well like Sway Bar, front hitch, than there is this sat dish I want, etc, etc.
