In my case, I have two serial 24VDC panels feeding a MPPT controller and six parallel 12VDC panels feeding a PWM controller. Although my PWM controller can handle 24VDC input, it would derate my panel capacity by half during the strongest sun periods because it can only clamp down the voltage instead of converting it to amperage. You would see even more of this if you tried to run a 48VDC bank of panels into a PWM controller. Both controller types have a purpose and both have cost per watt that intersects at some point based on your application.
