I made it this far without a hicup.....LOL
While pulling the 5er home this past camping trip, my Edge Insight alarm went off and it was flashing coolant temp (ECT) 228 degrees.
I obviously got off the throttle, was only doing 65 at the time anyway, no sound of the fan on either. Got the camper put away in storage and let the truck idle while I did so, temps went down and stayed around 186 degrees (Same for EOT) they were dead even. I got it home and looked around, no puking, coolant level is normal, no loss (Thank the Lord)...so I called my buddy Matt who did all the work in my signature, he runs a Diesel shop here in Tarrant County and he said prob a bad stat or weak fan clutch.
He gets the truck on Wed for testing. Hope it's a simple fix. Proud of my ol girl despite her being a 6.0.
Funny thing today, I ran the truck for quick trip to the shop to pick up a few things...when I got home the temp was solid 200 degrees. The dash needles haven't moved...the show all as "normal"
We'll get her worked out but that alarm going off about make me jump out of the seat, never heard it before. Little sucker is loud. LOL
Factory gauges are set to save us from ourselves...they stay "in the middle/normal range" unless there are real issues at hand for the simple fact that a lot of us would be calling service departments across the country with "my truck got up to 204F in stop & go traffic today...what do you think is wrong?" which would prompt a response of "your truck is fine, go away & leave us alone."
Imagine all the folks taking theirs in for service because their buddy has the same motor in the same truck and it runs 8F cooler!
To sum up, we're much happier not knowing..."ignorance is bliss" as they say...
I used to drive with my Scangauge always hooked up & tuned to the "worry gauges," now it stays in my toolbox as a diagnostic tool. I'm happier NOT twisting up watching temp fluctuations that hurt nothing but make me nervous.
OP, I hope the fix is minor & your 6.0L keeps giving you good service as it has been.
