My head is spinning.....

The more i read the more confused I get.

My TV is rated at 8450 lbs towing cap. My payload is listed as 1670. Figure 400 lbs for passengers, and my payload is 1270.

Can I tow a trailer that is dry weight 5580, GVWR 7000 (payload 1420) with a hitch weight of 650 lbs?

At first I thought I could, now it looks like I'm over.

What do y'all think? Thanks
  • Short answer, yes, it's fine.
Longer answer, you "could" get a bigger, higher towing capacity truck and it would be more effortless for the truck and a HD truck would be more effortless for you, given your inexperience towing, but you're ok with what you got.

Since you don't have the trailer yet, the formula should look like this:

Trailer weight (max) <= GCWR - Actual TV weight - Hitch system weight

Okay, thanks. Crunching numbers while considering water, passengers and the loaded hitch leaves me just under 400 lbs shy of max. I don't think clothes and food for the two of us would weigh much, but of course a generator and grill will tie up a lot of the reserve. I cannot upgrade the truck. So I have to decide if I want this trailer or ramp the trailer weight down some.

    Thanks
  • Gotta go out and weigh your TV fully loaded as if ready to tow. Total and each axle weights

Then gather TV's GCWR, F/R GAWR...and...trailers actual tongue weight fully loaded. If you don't have that, then the brochure tongue weight and note the dry weight..that will provide a ball park percentage tongue weight when loaded....unless it is a toy hauler, they have very different tongue weights empty and loaded

Now simple math to figure using this generic formula:

GCWR >= actual TV weight + Hitch system weight + Actual trailer weight

. If you don't have the actual trailer weight yet, use it's GVWR as the max it will ever weigh

Since you don't have the trailer yet, the formula should look like this:

Trailer weight (max) <= GCWR - Actual TV weight - Hitch system weight

There will be a need to check the actual tongue weight + Hitch System weight + TV's actual rear axle weight. That should be below the TV RGAWR

Yes you can tow it, people do it every day. How good of an experience you have and how enjoyable the ride will be is a whole different thing.

Are you saying you think it's doable, but not a good choice then?
  • 2016 ram 1500 5.7 hemi, 3.21 rear reg cab, 8 ft box. 1670 is off the door sticker. Tow cap confirmed with vin on Dodge website, and dodge tow charts. Thanks

  • need more info about the vehicle such as is it a truck ?

    What size engine

    what drive axle ratio

brand of vehicle and year model

    Others will have question also
  • Is 650 pounds of tongue weight dry? More if wet and loaded. What’s the WDH hitch’s weight? PS...I believe you are going to be ok.
