As for the axle moving on the leaf spring, I'd take a close look at it if you haven't already. There's a pin that goes through the spring pack and into a hole in the spring pad on the axle. This should prevent the axle from shifting, but I suppose it could jump this pin if the u-bolts were loose or it could have sheared off. I'm thinking the suspension may have been binding causing the appearance of it being off (I hope).
As far as the electrical harness, I am also considering doing it myself. I assume I'd have to replace it back to the electrical box mounted to the frame? Or does it get spliced in just past where the damage occurred? I don't think I'd be able to do a splice job mid-wire.
