The 6 speed will help, but to say it will pull a "fairly large trailer" is sort of subjective. My Tahoe did ok with a 6k 23' Rockwood. I didn't go with my 2500 for towing the trailer only, I also haul and pull construction equipment. With the Tahoe, I had to spend some extra time planning how I would load the cargo area and the camper. Took a little more work setting up the WD as well. The payload capacity isn't a whole lot. Dropping down from a fiver to a TT and a Tahoe may be more than you really want to do for the long run.
