I think the farmer/rancher not driving GMs in that area is accurate. I lived in Montana for years and there's a perception amongst the farm families I knew that the solid front axle is necessary off road. They drive GM for pavement princesses. (Not saying that's accurate, just what I heard from friends).
I do agree on the 3/4 tons being overloaded. Mine only has 1,600 pounds of payload left with my family and gear in the truck. If I ever were to pull a fifth wheel toy hauler, I'd need bags to keep the truck level. I've had 2,200 pounds of rock in the bed recently and I wouldn't want to drive any distance like that.
