My pinging Cummins
I’ve always heard this pinging sound (sounds just like a gasser timing issue) from my 06 5.9L Cummins when under load towing. Usually it does it just cruising on level highway at about 1600-1700 RPM....

I have a 05 model and I have never heard that type noise.
I use shell rotella oil 15w40
when I got my truck (used with 42K miles) it had a K&N air filter, the motor appeared to make more noise with that K&N air filter.
I replaced that air filter with the std 4" thick mopar air filter,
my truck has no aftermarket parts, just std mopar. now had 72K miles.
runs very good and gets good mpg for a big, heavy, strong, truck,
