My pinging Cummins
I’ve always heard this pinging sound (sounds just like a gasser timing issue) from my 06 5.9L Cummins when under load towing. Usually it does it just cruising on level highway at about 1600-1700 RPM. I could always get it to stop by speeding up or slowing down.
Last week I finally got out of the mountains and hills to some level ground and started using the cruise control set to about 63. The ping would start and just keep on going until a fueling change was called for. I returned to stock tune with the same results the next day.
What would cause this or is it normal with the late 5.9’s with the EGR cams? I’ve thought of maybe some water in the tank but I drained the bowl and none found. I’ve also thought of maybe a possible injector issue but this has always happened since new, and other than the black smoke on turbo spooling up it isn’t smoking. Truck ran great towing from the Cali redwoods and through the Oregon coast grades and the Blue Mountains.
I’ve used cetane boosters or additives on and off and it doesn’t seem to affect the pinging.
GCW was about 22k, and like I said without towing it doesn’t seem to ping much.
