The correct answer, as always, is "It Depends". It depends on the specific configuration.
In my case I have a long narrow bit to get through to reach my backyard shed. And there is a slight grade up from the street at the beginning. It's a narrow passage either way, but I found it nearly impossible to back in due to the added matter of the upslope at the beginning. Easier to back down it than up.
You have to try it both ways, then pick the least worst choice.
