What is the gearing in your truck? I have 3:55 in my Ram and while it isn't the best for towing, its not that bad. I have no problems towing my 27 ft trailer around 6000 lbs. I get around 9-10 mpg on average.
I cant see that you need a diesel for that trailer? a 1/2 Ram would do just fine. Get an 09 or up Ram and you get the MDS that cuts to 4 cycles when not towing and you save quite a bit. I get around 21-22 mpg when not towing the trailer :B
