You may be right, but you have to respects the guys honesty. I mean, how many mechanics do you know that when asked if you should pay them to upgrade your truck or get a new one, would respond, "Get a new one"? That response means money out of his pocket.
Your mechanics response may also be that you mentioned what areas you are wanting to visit...and I do recall you mentioned the Rockys. If that were the case, I could understand his reservations and somewhat agree but that shouldn't be taken as an absolute. I would not want to give up my forced induction at altitude but I also travel these roads somewhat daily. That does not mean forced induction is required, just preferred in my case.
