Need expert advice

This isn't strictly on topic but my wife's car has a bad master cylinder. Not a problem I thought so I bought a replacement and a Harbor Freight pressure bleed system. Only two nuts and a couple tubes to be removed. OK bolt number one came right off after I went out and bought a 14mm deep socket.. Bolt number two on the right hand side can only be accessed down a 2 inch wide 6 inch deep gap between the master cylinder and some plastic electrical box. The plastic box cannot be removed unless the master cyl is out. The socket contacts the side of the box. it's that tight.

The right hand bolt has rounded off flats, this cylinder was replaced 6 months ago and he may have had problems then. I eventually went and got a 6 point 14mm socket thinking that might help. I have applied PB Blaster. I tried tapping the 6 point down to seat it on the nut and it seems to lock on but putting the racket on only turns the socket on the nut and does not turn the nut.

Heat is out because of the plastic box an inch away. Not enough room for a bolt splitter.

Any suggestions? I hope some master mechanic out there may have way to deal with this.
  • When I worked in a Ford shop had to deal with rounded nuts and bolts after customers took their worst shot. My Snap On wrenches and sockets would loosen them because of their patented design. They were 3X pricier but I made a lot of money with them and worth every dollar.
  • I watched a video on YouTube and the guy went thru the things I thought of and finally showed Irwin Nut/Bolt extractors which were designed for this problem. I ordered a 9/16" deep socket which should work on a 14mm. You drive them on over the bad fastener and the hardened teeth bite into it. I'll let you know how it works Tuesday, or maybe Wednesday since the UPS guy delivers after 6PM a lot of times.

It will work. I have a set of Craftsman like that. Only used them a few times but they work.

    Get a set of these:

    Griptite Sockets

Not sure if they are available in deep socket version.

They look interesting but I'll see how the extractor works

If you look at this Irwin, the one I ordered, it looks the same as that one. Look down below for a view of the teeth: Amazon
  • I have a set of these and love them. Haven't ran in to any rounded that I couldn't get off using them.
  • The extractor came in, I added an extension whacked it on with a brass wrench and with some effort the nut came right off. The extractor is 3/8" socket size it seems like 1/2" would be better so you could use a big breaker bar. But you can't argue with success. I bought two new nuts to prevent this from happening again.
