I do put my cover so hinge is on front and latch on back. it helps keep the lid on when I forget to latch it closed.
I guess I've never lost a tank cover lid as I rarely have any need to open it. I added a clear view window so I can see what the regulator is telling me ...

... so about the only time I need access is to remove a tank to refill, in which case I'd remove the entire tank cover. Mine's fairly snug but I still secure it in place with a couple of mini bungie cords.
