- DutchmenSportExplorerWe use the same one we have in our house. Except our house is a King and the camper is Queen. It's a Serta!
- Jay_PatExplorerI purchased memory foam because it is easy to cut to fit the plywood foundation in the rv. Very easy to cut with an electric meat carving knife.
Feels like a regular mattress to me.
Pat - WayneAt63044ExplorerDitto what Jay Pat said. A regular queen can be cut to a short queen size with a serrated knife. Ordered our 8" thru Sams Club for $245 5 years ago. My wife is short and has a bit of an issue climbing up on 8"/ maybe 6" is enough.
- tomman58ExplorerUnlike many we use or TT 5 to 6 months a year so the mattress is in play unless you want a bad back. We bought ours at a mattress store. It is full size queen (on our last trailer it was a king and we had it shorten a few inches to fit) it is about 10" longer than the plywood base. When we bring in that slide I raise the plywood and then drop it down when in. The end of the mattress lays on on the dresser at the end. Works for us and the real mattress is very good , I hate foam and those products. This mattress can breathe and even in summer is cool.
- MerrykaliaExplorerWe had a TempurPedic in our house and LOVED it. Didn't want to spend $2500 for a mattress in our RV, but bought an 8" Spa Sensations Gel Memory Foam one from Walmart for less than $200. It was/is GREAT. When our TempurPedic died, we purchased the 10" Spa Sensations one for our house. It's still in great condition and like tomman58, we spend 100+ days in our RV each year.
- Community AlumniYou can find spring and foam mattresses in equivalent comfort levels. If you have one of the non standard mattress sizes (i.e short queen) then foam mattresses are nice because you can easily cut them down so you'll have more options. With spring mattresses you're limited to the ones that fit. Foam mattresses are normally easy to maneuver since they usually come in small vacuum packed boxes. Just drop the box on the bed, cut it open, and the mattress pops out.
As far as longevity, it depends on how you use it. If you're using the bed occasionally then longevity would be a wash between the two. The mattress won't see enough use to see a difference. If you're using it almost daily then I would lean more towards foam. Spring mattresses tend to show signs of wear only after a few years of daily use. Tomman58 mentioned breathability, but this isn't a problem with modern multilayered mattresses. A lot of foam mattresses are built with air chamber layers to allow heat to pass through.
We went through the whole foam vs spring thing. After lots of research and laying on tons of mattresses, foam ended up winning out and we won't be going back to spring. The foam mattress we bought ended up being better than any other spring mattress we've ever had. - TurnThePageExplorerI'm an inner spring mattress guy all the way. Even the foam ones that don't get hot are too hot for me.
- PershingDExplorerThe very first modification was to order a short queen memory foam from Amazon. Its warmer than I prefer, but my wife has RA in her hips and it is very comfortable for her. I'll adjust if it means she feels better while we're out.
- sdianel_-acct_cExplorerwe bought www.bedinabox.com at the recommendation of some members of this forum. We love it! We bought the PacBed Original. 11" deep with gel. They make a short Queen that fit perfectly. It was shipped to us in a box. Weighs about 87 pounds. Remove the old mattress, bring the box inside and put on bed platform, carefully unwrap the new one (don't cut the mattress), and voila! instant bed. We've had it about 3 years. Benefits: firm but no pressure points, gel makes it cooler, don't feel the other person when they toss and turn or get in or out of bed, retains it's shape even on edges. Well worth it and great 10 year warranty. You can try it for 60 days and if you don't like it they will pay to pick it up.
