Need to add water filter - looking for advice

Just picked up our new camper and I need to add a H2o filter as we always drink from our camper.

Our first camper had a whole system filter which was located just after the pump. The previous camper had a small filter with a separate faucet on the kitchen for drinking water.

I like the idea of the whole trailer filter as everything is covered. I never noticed a decrease in pressure but wonder if there is one.

Has anyone added one and where?

Thanks
  • I bought an inline filter and pressure regulator in the camping section at Walmart. No need to install anything under the sink. Also bought a 90 degree elbow for the water connection. So the elbow screws into the TT city water connection, the regulator screws into the elbow, a short hose connects to that and then the filter so the filter is not hanging, then the filter is connected to the hose which is connected to the CG spiket. Arrows on the filter make it dummy proof - good for me! Easy and your done. Coffee hasn't tasted better.

It has worked well for over 3 years of full time use. I also order replacement filters from this site as well.

That's a good site. We have a standard 10" canister with something like their RV-SED5 sediment cartridge, I think. Or maybe the 1 micron version, not sure.

We use a simple, large particulate filter cartridge (from Lowes, I think) between the camp's faucet and trailer. It will clog and the pressure will drop if it's doing it's job and the water is dirty. Changing the filter is easy and cheap.

We don't use any combination/carbon filters at the faucet because they will take out chlorine from the water. We usually camp where the water is chlorinated, and I like the chlorine to get in the trailer's water system and help keep it disinfected.

But we do use a small carbon filter in a water pitcher for tea and juice to get rid of the chlorine smell. In Ontario, they really dose up the water with chlorine in the Provincial Parks. A kitchen faucet mounted cartridge would do the same.

I've thought about adding a water softener cartridge at the faucet because we have camped with hard water for several weeks at a time. But haven't done anything so far ...

  • I would consider a whole house filter from one of the big box stores. You can get fittings to adapt to a garden hose at the sane store. Make a bracket for it to stand upright and you're set. Alternately, you can buy a CAMCO inline filter at CW or other RV places that screws onto a garden hose.
