Need to raise camper 3"...looking for suggestions

Well I finally loaded the TC in my truck. For the overhang to clear the cab sufficiently I will need to raise the camper a minimum of 3" on the bed.
My thoughts of doing this is as follows...

The bottom of the camper has exposed framing of 2"x4" and 2x2's ..I am thinking of screwing 2x4's to this frame pattern.

To gain the additional 1&1/2" I am thinking of framing a platform in the bed and covering it with a sheet of 3/4" plywood, on top of that I will place a thin rubber bed mat.

Am I missing anything here or is this a good plan???

Thanks
  • fikkellin...I kinda like that idea of the foam...I wonder if I could stack two sheets with out problems?
  • I needed 2" additional height and used 2" pink ridged foam from menards works great.....
for 5,000 miles and still working great
  • I'm with Victory also...

this was my take on the same concept/idea... cut the 3/4" plywood into the x-brace concept so my platform, and braces for the camper when off the truck are all in one. saves weight too.

  • I use four 2x6's running lengthwise screwed to a sheet of marine grade plywood, covered this with a rubber bed liner. Going to add some hard foam insulation in the gaps for added protection in winter camping.
  • My solution would be to weld a simple 4'x8' perimeter frame with cross members from 3x3x14ga galvanized steel square tube, weld 1"x1" tabs to each corner and screw it to the camper so it stays with the camper when the camper is unloaded. Nothing to lift, carry, find a spot to store it, or line it up when loading/unloading the camper. It's just part of the camper.
  • I screwed a double layer of 2 X 4 and one layer of 1 X 4 on the bottom (around the perimeter) of the camper. It raised the camper 3.5 inches and gives me that open space underneath.

My fresh tank is up front. That open space allowed me to run a drain tube to the rear of the camper. Now I can drain the fresh tank, without getting water in the truck bed.
  • I had a rather expensive 1 1/2 by 3 frame made from light aluminium tubing on edge for mine. It was sprayed with Linux on all sides and did not slip. It's certainly a good thing to have notches in whatever you put in so the camper cannot slip about.
  • If it were me, I would just build one platform (2x4's with plywood)and set it in the bed of the truck and be done with it.
