I've had two 3/4 tom Suburbans, a 1996 and my current 2001 with the 6.0l engine and 4.10 rear end. It's rated it's rated to tow 10,000 lbs, will easily fit the family and is easy to drive.
One thing I wish I knew when shopping is that the Suburban seat covers are replaceable. I turned down many Subs including an 8.1 or two because the drivers seat was torn up. Had I known at the time that people sell replacement covers and foam for about three to five hundred dollars per seat, I would been driving an 8.1 with new seats many months ago. Here's a link to one company which seems to me to be the most expensive of the covers. I like the link because they have videos of how to replace the covers so you can see if it's something you think you could do yourself.

I did briefly consider vans, but there is no foot room for the passenger or even the driver in my opinion.
