Negotiating Used Trailer

Hi,

I'm looking at purchasing our first travel trailer from a dealer in Montana. Its a couple years old and listed for $25,900.

Is there a rule of thumb on how much I should pay a dealer for a used RV? Should I expect to pay the asking price or are the artificially high? What's your purchase strategy and what would you suggest I do with this unit/offer.

Thanks
Josh

We're looking for a rather particular model that I've only been able to find in Montana. Checked Idaho, Alberta, BC and Saskatchewan. I will make sure to look into the taxes in Montana, I'm waiting to hear back from the dealer. USD are not an issue, we purchased USD a few years back when the Canadian dollar was par + 3 cents. Medical insurance is done. No 1 ton dually diesel, just a F250 HD 4x4. Hopefully that'll get us up and down.

  • I would never pay asking price.

I would have to believe most dealers are going to price high to leave "negotiating" room. In some cases this could be REALLY high so that when the customer negotiates down, they still make a tidy sum, but the customer feels like they won.

I have seen pictures of used rigs on dealers websites with crazy high asking prices (and in some cases you can see from the pics that there is water damage). If you look at the same model for sale on RV Trader and Craigslist you would find them for sale significantly less.
  • There are no secret formulas,if there were the dealers probably started them as sales tools.Just remember to include everything like dollar exchange, entry fees, tax, past use like oil field housing etc. There is many of those around in Saskatchewan, the Dakotas,Montana and Alberta. They have had some tough winters and conditions. No matter what the price some one will have paid less and like me you feel better if you assume you paid too much.Nada, MSRP are useless in the real world of RV's.Have fun, then start the travel medical insurance dance.lol.Oh have you bought your one ton dually diesel already.
